McCain, Cavendish, and Lamb Weston all have potato processing plants and by extension have commercial interests in the St Mary River Irrigation District region.
In March 2023, McCain announced that it will spend $600 to double the size of its processing plant in Coaldale, Alberta. This marks the largest global investment in the company’s history.
High Value Crops
Potatoes contributed $2.31 billion to the Alberta economy in 2022.
Approximately 87% of potato crops are irrigated as they require relatively high soil moisture during the growing season to produce high-quality crops.
With water restrictions due to drought, farmers lose revenue from a loss of quantity and yield in their potato crops.
